The Obama Backdraft

As of today, a Rasmussen poll places Obama at 51% of likely voters (including "leaners" of 3%). McCan't trailed with 45% (leaners 2%). Note that these numbers are after the Palin pick. Could it be that McCan't's horrible choice of Palin for VP has only reinforced the notion that he lacks the judgment and temperament to be President?

Interestingly enough, Palin scored higher than McCan't in a separate survey asking people which candidate they'd most like to meet. Obama scored first with 43%, Palin second with 30%, McCan't third with 16%. That's the Republican nominee, folks, who's being outshone by his own veep pick.

The dark side of this irony is that Palin has, by her very presence and simply due to the fact that she's a white, evangelical Christianist mom who wants to outlaw abortion, engendered unbelievably strong support for McCan't among religious "conservatives." What this could mean for the future of the Republican party -- in effect, turning it finally into the party of theocracy most non-Republicans have believed it to be since before W was installed as President -- is anyone's guess. In my book, this development could not have been what McCan't envisioned (had he actually had one) when he selected Mrs. Palin as his running mate.

Side note: the daily Gallup poll has Obama at 50% for the first time, McCan't at 42%.
