Self-evident hypocrisy

During his speech last night (I got to read the text), McCan't provided his answer to America's problems: "serve a goal greater than yourself." A noble and lofty conceit, one that resonates with many Americans who recognize that selfishness breeds fear and distrust.

But as Jacob Heilbrunn notes, McCan't "never really explained what that goal might be." Certainly, in the way McCan't (weakly) owned up to Republican quest for power that left Americans behind ("We lost their trust"), he offered at least a modicum of admission that continuing with more of the same won't work. It won't work to ignore working Americans losing jobs with no safety net, no retraining, inadequate unemployment insurance. It won't work to spend more than $10 billion a month on a war that so far has delivered us precious little in the areas of safety or national security, and has delivered much in the areas of lives unnecessarily lost and higher gas prices due to regional instability. Since McCan't can't think of what we can do to achieve his lofty ideal, perhaps he can turn to his running mate, or former rival, for an answer.

Based on the savage attacks leveled at Obama by Palin and Giuliani, there comes a suggestion from Rob McKay: become a community organizer.
