McCan't and Keating

I remember the Lincoln Savings debacle very well. I worked for another S&L, Brookside Savings, in 1988 and was laid off in January 1989, three months before the government seized Lincoln.

Obama has been counter-attacking McCan't on his association with convicted felon Charles Keating, who lived in Phoenix and was an early and repeated donor to McCan't's campaign over the years. The charge is that McCan't "played a key role" in trying to intervene with federal regulators on Keating's behalf, and actually championed legislation to delay S&L regulation, which would have let Keating continue to defraud people out of billions of dollars for another four years. As it stands, federal inaction accomplished the same thing.

For his role in this scandal, McCan't was rebuked by the Senate for using poor judgement in his relationship with the millionaire banker, but was cleared of wrongdoing.

I'd say allowing himself to be used by a businessman to serve a special interest far exceeds anything Obama may have done as a friend or associate of Rezko, Ayers, or Wright.

But who cares about facts? Certainly not the Old Man and the C.
