As some of you may know, police in St. Paul have arrested and/or detained several journalists and protestors against the Republican National Convention. Among them is Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now! and a heroine to many (including my brave and strong sister-in-law, Melanie).
A petition is circulating around the web to gather 10,000 signatures over the next 24 hours. Please do your part by forwarding this email and this link to your concerned friends and family members.
When I saw the videos and photos of Amy Goodman getting arrested and homes being raided by the police, it could have been Russia, or China, or Germany circa 1938. You can view them on Glenn Greenwald's blog. These kinds of tactics are disgusting. The apparent mind-set of the police is that, because there are real criminals amongst the peaceful protesters, anything is permissible to get to those criminals, including detaining, roughing up, arresting, and shooting at innocent Americans who simply wish to make their feelings known. Echoing what I read earlier today, "Has America truly come to this?"
